My dissertation is divided into three parts:Part One: mainly discuss Xu Wei's multi-faceted personality. In the past, we only analyzed Xu Wei's personality based on his drama. Because of the limit of the literary form, the conclusion might be one-sided. In order to show Xu Wei's multi-faceted personality in reality, we adopt the method of completeness. We conclude the many aspects of his personality by making a comprehensive review of Xu Wei's poetry, prose and drama, and by making a comparison of literature and history. When Xu Wei was young, he loved the country, worried about the society and he was very active. He warmly praised those who had protected the country, took part in and made plans for the war against the enemies. Though he was in danger, he worried about his country and cared about the policies. In his mid-age, as his thought became mature, he sought for independence and frankness. He positioned himself equally with the authority and the rich, never followed the others, and he was broad-minded and thought independently. He stuck to the principle that "Never conceal your fault"(Zi Wei Mu Zhi Ming),composed and declared publicly works which he had done for others. He was not bound down by the superior and straightforwardly spoke out his mind. The hard life made him act differently to fight against the reality. He gradually developed obstinate and unruly personality with which he was not satisfied. In Xu Wei's late years, he went back to serenity. He wrote for his own comfort and delight. Though these four personalities interwove with each other, but each distinguished itself in different times.Part Two: mainly discuss Xu Wei's aesthetic features of his poetry style. His personality and poetry style are united, so the former is reflected in his poetry and the change of his personality results in the change of poetry style. His heroic style and grand vision embody his independence and frankness. Xu Wei's poetry are full of infuriation and lofty sentiments. These are manifested as the following: First, his poetry is unconventional and full of peculiar imagination. Second, the images in his poetry are colorful and uncommon. Third, they have profound meanings. Fourth, there are brilliant selfness in the candid expressions of emotion. He used queer and strange poetry styles to express cynicism. The deviation from traditional taste was formed with the pursue of image and the use of language. First, Xu Wei's pursued and used bizarre and ferocious image. Then, Xu Wei chose sharpwords, which were full of satire. Last, it was due to his use of colour. In his late years, Xu Wei pursued tranquility of soul and his poetry became mature with the beauty of naturalness and simpleness. Some of the poems seemed simple, but contained profundity. This was benefited by his innovative excavation from ordinary matters, his richness beyond poem, and strong reflection of emotion with simple words.Part Three: discuss the reasons why his many-faceted personality developed from the aspect of source of thoughts. In this chapter, I tease the thoughts behind Xu Wei's personality from the aspect of macrocosm. The conclusions are: the formation of Xu Wei's many-faceted and peculiar personality was rooted in the impulsion of different schools of thoughts at that time. By the edification of Confucianism, Xu Wei concerned about the country, understood people's tribulations and worried about problems of the society. He was confident to search the ways of performing meritorious service. This presented his love for the country and extroversion of personality. Xu Wei respected Mencius' outstanding independence and dignity, and he honoured Wang Theory(theory by a scholar named Wang Yangming). He stated transcendence, independent decision, and "naturalness" and ''true-self. With these, he developed the personality' of independence and candor. Affected by Zen's philosophy of natural comfort, Mencius' consciousness of trandcendence and inaction, and Wang Theory's taste, Xu Wei felt contented when he was old. He realized th...
