It is a vexed question on the controversy of pessimism of history theory and optimism of history theory. Today, the controversy runs to incandescence and becomes focus of research. The question concerns man's existence and development, so it is significant to research the issue.This paper traces to the source on the controversy of pessimism of history theory and optimism of history theory and analyses those contemporary theories. At last, what we learn from the controversy is discussed. The paper has three parts. In the first part, history foundation of the contemporary controversy of pessimism of history theory and optimism of history theory is described.
