Mr. Xia Ye was an outstanding scholar, whose academic achievements mainly refer to both fields of the studies of Chinese theatrical Music, the "father" of which is honored to him, and Chinese ancient Music History, in which he is regarded as one of the founders. Therefore, it is very necessary for us, working on music, to recognize Mr. Xia's contributions in China. The thesis is consisted of two parts, "the study of Chinese Theatrical Music" and "the study of Chinese Ancient Music History". It uses the methodology of comparative study, evaluating figures, ideas, criticism, and conclusions respectively in the historical, academic, objective and particular contexts. Through narrating and analyzing the opinions on same or different issues discussed by Mr. Xia and others, the thesis makes efforts to evaluate Mr. Xia's contributionsobjectively in the historical condition. The discussion is begun with The Study of Chinese Theatrical Music, Mr. Xia's major workin this field. Based on discussing the concepts of "Shengqiang classification" and "classification of music system" and their influences, the thesis firmly evaluates Mr. Xia as a "father" for this discipline, and his further effects are also fairly demonstrated in the new studies to Chinese theatrical music. In the study of Chinese ancient music, Mr. Xia primarily contributed to three aspects: the study of modes, Jiang Bai-shi's compositions, and The Concise History of Chinese Ancient Music. The thesis points out that in these three researching areas Mr. Xia provided his valuable academic opinions, thinking and influences to later studies, which fully manifests that he was the figure having made the important foundation for the study of Chinese ancient music history. In conclusion, the author of the thesis summarizes the achievements made by Mr. Xia in the both studies of Chinese theatrical music and Chinese ancient music history, and emphasizes the significance and necessity of the study to Mr. Xia's status in these two fields, from which his academic thoughts and studying spirit would be explored.
