Adaptation from videogame is a new way of filmmaking which first occurred in the 1980s. After more than 20 years development, totally 12 films of this genre have been produced and presented. This thesis is just based on the description and analysis of these works. This paper devise the developments of these film into three stages, describes its basic facts, and delineates the genres of those videogames used as the source for adaptation.After analyzing the characteristics of videogames and their adapted filmic versions, this paper tries to make a conclusion that all the twelve films resulted from three adaptation strategies. At the same time, the paper traces out the evolution track of visual effect and lays foundation for the following theoretical research. Based on the above descriptions, the section of theoretical research of the paper compares films and videogames with respect to their basic ways of being and discerns their differences in both the production process and the subjective aesthetic experience. Theoretical problems such as the shift of viewpoint sound and sight effect, ideological representations in film are discussed in detail.This discussion leads to the conclusion that the key to any successful adaptation should be its observance of the rules and regulations of filmmaking. Finally and most importantly, the paper points out videogame-adapted film will be of great importance to the film culture development in china.
