A Study Of Consecutive Interpreting Process With Adaptation Theoretical Approach

Adaptation theory is the most explanatory theory of pragmatics for interpreting study.Belgium pragmatic secretary general Verschueren proposed a comprehensive perspective of pragmatics,which means involving the pragmatic research in every aspect of language where meanings can be conveyed.At the same time,the comprehensive perspective is the general guiding ideology of adaptation theory,including overall and delicate study of selection and adaptation of language.What's more,interpreting is a process beyond linguistic level,influenced and restrained by different elements.Therefore,it has scientific and directive significance to explain the circumstances of interpreting with adaptation theory.The thesis gives a thorough study on application of the adaptation theory in interpreting.In the process of interpreting,interpreter,as the intermediate role of communication,must choose decent expressions considering both of the speaker and audience on the basis of understanding,in order to reproduce all the meanings of the source language and fulfill the objective of favoring communication.Therefore,according to the adaptation theory,the thesis discusses how to realize Adaptation strategies in interpreting process from three aspects,namely contextual correlates of adaptability,structural objects of adaptability and dynamic adaptability.The thesis takes the process of the fifth All China Interpreting Contest National Final as examples,for the contestants were the excellent student interpreters from different provinces and cities in China.Therefore,the study of their interpreting methods and courses would represent the present status of China's student interpreters,as well as their competence in interpreting and their interpreting quality.The thesis analyzes the linguistic capacity of student interpreters under the real circumstance of interpreting,planning to research the key issues of the transition from student interpreters to professional the interpreters,and the improvement of interpreting teaching in colleges and universities.On one hand,the thesis analyzes how the student interpreters use adaptation theory based on the materials of consecutive interpreting recorded by the writer.On the other hand,the thesis manages to find the insufficiency and deficiency of student interpreter's behavior,and conclude when and how to use adaptation theory.Thereby,the thesis attempts to reflect the practical significance of adaptation theory.
