Eric Fischl is one of the most important realistic painters in the United States. This thesis is about the study of his work in the early and mid eighties. The conclusion of this thesis is: 1) Eric Fischl' s realistic painting has included appropriation -> the feature of soap opera% a number of nudes and a strong contemporary sense, appear different from the traditional realistic painting; 2) Eric Fischl has revealed deeply the spiritual crisis and the confusion of existence of the American middle-class by the means of realistic painting, he thinks the middle-class' s life style full of phonies, and reflects the tragic social problems in this stratum; 3) The work of Eric Fischl enlighten the intermediate stratum of contemporary China who advocate the taste of western middle-class to introspect their life style, and reconsider their goal of life.
