| As the main medium in the modern times, newspapers and periodicals are one of the symbols of the social civilization and progress. During the May Fourth Period in Hunan province, the prosperity of newspapers and periodicals had. an extensive and far-reaching influence on politics, economy, thought and culture, and quickened the social modernization. However, no one has yet systematically and completely studied the newspapers and periodicals of Hunan province in the May Fourth Period. By making a complete study , nevertheless, not only can we fill the blank of the study of Hunan local culture history, especially the medium history, it can also provide with persuasive background materials to investigate how the society was transformed from a traditional society to a modern society during that period and with important experience for the development and reformation of our modern newspapers and periodicals enterprise. To learn from the experts and scholars in this field , the author in this dissertation tries to analyze and investigate systematically the manifestation, features, reasons and influences of the prosperity of the newspapers and periodicals in Hunan province during the May Fourth Period on the basis of the achievements of previous studies.This dissertation is divided into three parts:Part I : a general survey of the newspapers and periodicals in Hunan during the May Fourth Period. The dissertation introduces the developing situation of the newspapers and periodicals of Hunan roughly in four stages:(1) Within the period when Hunan was presided by Xiangming Tang (1915.9-1916.7): The newspapers and periodicals were controlled by Shikai Yuan and developed slowly; (2) During the period when Hunan was supervised by Renxi Liu and Yankai Tan (1916.7-1917.9): The newspapers and periodicals were active for a short time and had little influence;(3) During the period when Hunan was conquered by Liangzuo Fu and Jingyao Zhang(1917.9-1920.6):The newspapers and periodicals were reanimated a prosperous situation and had a far-reaching influence;(4)During the period when Hunan was supervised by Yankai Tan for the third time and governed by Hengti Zhao (1920.6-1921.10): The newspapers and periodicals were undulated and lost the climatic light gradually.Part II :an analysis of the features and reasons for the development of the newspapers and periodicals in Hunan during the May Fourth Period. This dissertation holds the view that the features of them are as follows :(l)They are bountiful in varieties and categories;(2)They are great in numbers but short in time for most of them;(3)Changsha-the metropolitian of Hunan province-was the center of the newspapers and periodicals enterprises and only a few newspapers and periodicals in other places of Hunan province;(4)Lots of newpapers and periodicals that had a national-wide influence appeared. As to the reasons for their development, this dissentation analyzes them from the following four respects: l.the undulation of the society and administration; 2.the partial prosperity and development of Hunan province;3.the influence and impetus of the revolution tide in the country and abroad; 4.the emphasis on the press posedby the higher intellectuals.Part III:an expounding on the influence of the development of the newspapers and periodicals of the May Fourth Period on the society of Hunan province:(l)The establishment of a variety of newspapers and periodicals provided the persons of insight with a stage to propagate new thoughts and ideas .They propagated their ideas, political views and thus freshened the social atmosphere, which had a far-reaching influence on the people of every social stratum;(2)The persons of insights opposed against the old feudal ethical code and improved the social custom;(3)They exposed the invading actions of the imperialism and the betraying crime of the warlord and supported Hunan people to fight against the imperialism and feudalism;(4)They introduced and propagated Marxism and created a condition for the establishment of t... |
