Overseas students' literature of Mainland China, the miniature of the cultural conflicts and communication between the Chinese and western cultures, is an important record of the process of China's modernization. Based on the evolution of such concepts as "homesickness", "patriotism" and "cultural conflicts", this thesis expounds its values and significance. With only slight touches on foreign cultures and weak literary values, the really mature literary works of the overseas students, in its strict sense, did not appear in modern times. It appeared in the time of prior to or after "May Fourth" with such common topics: the gloomy spirits caused by the suffering from humiliation, the homesickness for the motherland, and the inability to make the country powerful. Meanwhile, a sense of inferiority caused by the great distances between the Chinese and western cultures leads to the strong expression of patriotism and tragic characteristics. The overseas students' literature after China's opening to the world carries on the tradition of revealing these topics, but much attention is paid on the description of individual experiences, which is full of individual struggle and self-improvement. They reveal the embarrassing status of the co-existence of totally different cultures, and such central ideas as humanity and fate. This literature, as the medium and backbone of cross-culturalcommunication, forms the peculiar feature of the mutual penetration and reaction between native culture and foreign one, and traditional and modern one.
