Modern Chinese Adverb Study

In this thesis, we focus on the definition (including connotation and denotation) , the classification of emotional adverb and something related else in modern Chinese.First, we go back to the important views about mood, modal auxiliary , emotional adverb in several key Chinese grammar works which published before liberation. It isMr. WangLi who first put forward the term--emotional adverb. But the theoreticalorigin of emotional adverb should be dated back to Mr. ZhaoYuanren's paper--TheStudy of Modal Auxiliary in Beijing. SuZhou. ChangZhou Dialect.In chapter two, we discussed the definition of emotional adverb according to semiotics and logic . We think that emotional adverbs are adverbs which express the speaker's subjective evaluation to the true value of the sentences. On the basis of this definition , we have two conclusions: one is that emotional adverb only can be distributed in declarative sentence, imperative sentence, exclamatory sentence which have true value, not distributed in interrogative sentence. The other is modal auxiliary should be looked upon as emotional adverb in modal proposition.After putting forward 3 criterions of identification of emotional adverb, we have classified the emotional adverbs according to the class of sentences and grammatical sense.At last, we discussed the distribution of emotional adverb in sentence-type andit's pragmatically function. We also suggest that a new grammar category--modalcategory should be established in modern Chinese grammar.In order to read the thesis conveniently, each chapter includes a summary that recapitulates the main points of the chapter.
