With the studying of the varieties of the concept so far of Za Wen, This thesis has discerned that there had been two different kinds of views of Za Wen :one held that Za Wen is but a rather catch-all name for all kinds of prose pieces placed between two covers; the other took it as a generic term of prose writing of distinct characters. And, as far as the latter one is concerned, the understandings on Za Wen of LuXun, Qu Qiubai, Feng Xuefeng and Tang Tao could all be translated as this: Za Wen is a kind of argumentation written literarily for criticizing purpose, which believed by the author the most appropriate and satisfying one of all these descriptions.The thesis then places analyses on what has brought about the obscurity, or even the absence /lose of the character of criticizing contained in the understandings of the scholars referred to above in the concepts of Za Wen of the later researchers. Further, it gives a series of convincing examples collected from a variety of scholarly writings by different producers to show how this has resulted in a state of confusion and contradiction when comes to the comprehension of Za Wen and determining which pieces of the prose writings of certain modern writers can be classified into the family of Za Wen. The author maintains that the only most effective way at the present to improve, or even end this frustrating confusing and contradictory situation is to bring the character ofcriticizing back into Za Wen as one of its necessary features of being Za Wen. By doing this , we'll also gain new access to classifying the subordinate categories of Modern Prose. The piece then does its own work of this property.Since all the time there are sorts of misunderstandings of the criticizing feature of Za Wen, this paper takes rectifying this deviation its duty-bound and indispensable work just as it has done and has given its own interpretation on it. In the following three sections of this thesis, the author elaborates on his reasons why the criticizing on cultures and societies should be considered as one of, or even the above-all feature(s) of Modern Za Wen , taking his grounds of argument out of the background from which Modern Za Wen came, the relationship between some modern writers' choosing or abandoning of Za Wen in their prose writing and the character of criticizing of Modern Za Wen, and the interior cause of Modern Za Wen' flourishing and declining from the passing away of Lu Xun to the end of the Cultural Revolution . The expounding in this thesis constitutes the understanding of the author on Modern Za Wen as a whole. That is, Modern Za Wen is not only a sort of argumentation of literary feature, but exactly also a sort of argumentation of literary feature, which for criticizing purpose.
