As women are central to Lillian Hellman's plays, this paper reflects women characters' position in society at the time of writing and reveals their oppressed and abnormal emotions. This paper analyzes the status of women in that period: they have no money and thus no power; they are victims who fall prey to manipulation by men. These women characters in her plays, such as Regina in tine Little Foxes, set in 1900, without money are dependent on what they are given or can manipulate from men. A Close study indicates that Hellman's dramatic technique centers upon contrast and conflict, with the resulting tension rising to climax, she gives each leading character a "counterpart": Regina and Birdie, Martha and Karen, Carrie and Anna. Furthermore, in this paper great sympathy is shown to the Lesbianism, much effort are made to explore the destructive aspects of sibling love, concerns are given to the evil emotions.
