This paper, by an approach of diachronic and comparative research, discusses the historic stages, present status and future trends of loanword absorption in Chinese and Russian. Efforts have been made on explaining the related issues with the theories of cultural linguistics and cognitive linguistics. The author maintains that both Chinese and Russian have the trend of a growth in alphabetic loanwords and morphemicalization of loanwords. As for the characteristic difference, Chinese loanwords are mostly free-translated disyllables while those of Russian are in great majority transliterated words. It should be true, either by the internal characteristics of the two languages or by the facts (traditional and modern) outside of language, that Russian has much more loanwords than Chinese does.
