This is a report on a Chinese-English translation practice.The source text is selected from Languages of Chinese Nation authored by Zheng Zining,published by Jiuzhou Press.The translator chooses the eighth chapter for Chinese-English translation.This chapter has a total of 18,309 Chinese characters and mainly explores the origin,development and evolution of place names such as Mount Cangshan and Turpan from the perspective of language.This translation report mainly elaborates and illustrates the difficulties encountered by the translator in the translation process and the translation methods used to solve them.The translation difficulties include culture-loaded words,book titles,Chinese allusions and sentences with the ancient Yue language,and the translator adopts transliteration plus annotation,transliteration plus literal translation,free translation,and paraphrase for these difficulties.In an effort to achieve faithfulness to the original text,the translator hopes to help the target readers understand Chinese language and culture to the greatest extent and also to provide reference for translation research of language and culture texts.
