With Chinese reform and opening, mass culture starts from scratch, whose status and function in the culture system with Chinese characteristics are more and more important. Mass culture influences mainstream culture and elite culture evidently, and the consumerism ideology challenges the socialism mainstream ideology. The author analyses the intersect relation between consumerism ideology and socialism mainstream ideology, explores consumerism ideology of the mass culture comprehensively, and initiates a kind of moderate and sound consumerism as well. There are five parts of the thesis.The first part: Introduction. By analyzing the relation between mass culture and other cultures, the author gives a definition of mass culture, lists the theoretical task, analytic frame and research method.The second part: Contemporary mass culture's partita of development. From the end of 1970's to the middle of 1990's, the development of mass culture in contemporary China experienced three phases: the introduction and imitation of oversea mass culture, tentative formation of Chinese native mass culture, full development of the culture industry.The third part: the analysis of mass culture's ideology in the social transformation period. In that period, consumerism ideology has infiltrated into all aspects of daily life, which coexisted with the socialist mainstream ideology. Interest disintegration leads to the conflict of two kinds of ideologies. The loss of cultural judgmental criteria makes mass culture lose criteria in the fields ofproduction, circulation and consumption in varying degrees. The cultural modernization transformation inspired the modern transformation of mass culture in the function, construction, the operation pattern and self-awareness. The changes of cultural production laws provided cultural product and cultural industry with system guarantee. The control of the media made consumerism ideology put on the wing of the media, which influenced the mass significantly. The effect of mass culture and consumerism ideology has emerged mutual opposed tension: consumption elevates the level of mass life but ruins it; mundane life is fine but ugly; mass realize their selves by mass culture which advocates individuality, but lost theirs essence.The forth part: The construction of mass culture ideology in social transformation period. On the ideological level, socialist mainstream ideology should march with times, developing itself with moderate and sound consumerism in a coordinating way; on the culture level, we should bring mainstream culture, elite culture and mass culture into appropriate and exact function; on the carrier level, mass culture industry should be developed in a fit means.The fifth part: Closing. Phenomena of all kinds during their occurrence, development and change manifested that mass culture has two sides as a result of modernization, which can be harmful or beneficial to human being, which is worth thinking.
