| Philosophers through history and around the world are concerned about the value and meaning of life. While philosophers who insisted on positivism concerned only the reality but repelled the study on values. The balance between instrumental rationality and value rationality has been broken, which lead to confront between science and humanism. Cosmic and life, reality and value, spirit and substance have been separated. Fang Dongmei tried to construct his philosophy on living which intend to eliminate the separation and unify the feeling and the ration.The misery consciousness about the culture crisis throughout the world motivated Fang to discuss the meaning of life. On one hand, he studied west philosophy and culture deeply and drew the conclusion that the thinking pattern of dichotomy in west religion and science emphasized the separation between subject and object, which accelerated the development of instrumental rationality but ignored the value and meaning of life. The consequence was humanistic split and many abuses in modern society, for example, catabolism, utilitarianism and selfishness. Problem of human-distant denied the meaning of human being and real life, resulted in nihilism. On the other hand, Fang had a deep reception on the crisis of meaning in modern China. How to conquer the concurrence of maze on moral, being and metaphysical? How to get the new identity? Thus became to be the main proposition of the times. So it was important to get back the lost meaning of life.Fang's philosophy put forward the life to be the noumenon to unifyfeeling and ration which are different essentially but interdependent. Substance and spirit constitute life, so life could be the base to communicate feeling and ration. In fact, the noumenon of life is themagnification of individual life.The creative course of life spread in two dimensions. One is the debates over heave and man, the other one is the debates over the collective and the individual. Heave and man, collective and individual can achieve harmonious. The meaning of collective should be implement on individual. At the same time, individual exceed the finity by enlisting itself in the creative course collective.The meaning of life carries out during the course of cultivating the personality and advancing the spiritual bourn. The personality contains two essential factors: feeling and ration. A satisfactory personality is a harmonious integer of the two factors. Finally, one should acquire truth, goodness and beauty, become to be a god-man.Fang's philosophy is an academic attempt to cure the disadvantages in modern society. It advanced a mode to get rid of confront or separate between reality and meaning. But fang's philosophy has the smell of subjectivism and psychologism. It is also short of deep analyse and illuminate on how to unify feeling and ration. In addition, Fang'sphilosophy is confined in the field of pure theory. It can't extend to broad existence world without the corresponding system and organization. In the final analysis, Fang's moral-idealism can't eliminate the crisis of meaning. |
