George Elliot is regarded as the pioneer of psychological novel in England. The thesis tries to make the researches about characteristics of her early novels that are directly affected by her morality discussion and her position in the history of English literature . The psychoanalytic style will be analyzed in this thesis from three aspects: characteristic, the cause of formation and connotation.Totally, George Elliot's psychoanalytic styles are as follows: holistic grasp of mental development; mental alteration being the inherent key plot; complexity of mental movement; psychoanalytic skill in blending traditionalism and modernism. A thorough research of her characters' psychology makes them multidimensional. Elliot's unique aesthetic psychoanalytic approach has its social, philosophical and personal causes. Elliot's ideality is "universal love", which is the core of her creation. Elliot's early novels mark the advent of a transitional phase in English literature for the coexistence of traditionalism and modernism in her early novels. Thus Elliot begins an age of modern psychological novel by using her unique psychoanalysis while keeping realistic traditions at the same time.
