The paper attempts to do the research from perspective of Modern Chinese History of Thought, and presents the illustration of the Epigraphy Calligraphy and painting by combining the key concepts of Yu Shaosong'panting thoughts, such as "spirit", "character" and "nature" with methods of art history and statistics. The paper has introduced how Yu Shaosong who influenced by the New traditionalism restored the tradition via the Epigraphy Calligraphy and painting in the 1930s, and an array of traditional men of letters under the leadership of Yu Shaosong protected the traditional culture by new media.The first chapter is a presentation about the ideological background of "new nationalism" and "new traditionalism" after the year of 1928, and the emerging and development of arts journals.The second chapter introduces that methods analyzing and investigating on statistics and literatures are adopted to do more profound researches about the Epigraphy Calligraphy and painting. Concerning to the personal experiences of chief editor Yu Shaosong, the author has explored the reasons and standards to the selection of collections.In the third chapter, several key words, including "spirit", "character" and "nature", are summarized by combing the painting thoughts of Yu Shaosong, which have directly exerted great impact on the compilation and contents of the Epigraphy Calligraphy and painting.
