In the literary world of the beginning of Qing Dynasty, Li Yu is a particular figure that had attracted people's attention. He was not only created many absorbing stories and plays, but also sum up his play-writing experience to develop the theory of Chinese traditional plays. He was mostly famous for his drama and Ten Plays was his excellent representative work. The treatise aim to evaluate it with the growing history of Chinese traditional plays, stories and theories of Li Yu, appraise it objectively and avoid ignoring its shortcomings, establish the distinctive position of Li Yu in the developing history of Chinese traditional plays.The treatise consists of two parts. Part one .concludes vertical and horizontal research. The first try to find the distinction and unique value of Ten Plays in the developing history of Chinese traditional plays. Ten Plays is distinctive for the motive, means of expression and style of the author, which was decided by the special identity and special living condition of Li Yu. Li Yu had four plays adapted from his stories, for horizontal research, the treatise making careful researches on the modification from the four plays to them original stories, considering his other plays and stories aim to discover the differences of his writing motive, concept and state between the plays and stories.Part two involves the study of idea and writing technique of Li Yu in Ten Plays. Li Yu had a complicated and paradoxical attitude to female, love and marriage. The treatise points out his progressive ideas, avoid ignoring his outworn concept in Ten Plays, and analyses the reason why his attitude is complicated and paradoxical. In art respect, the treatise concerned about how did Li Yu achieve novelty in Ten Plays, what was the experience and technique that he had learned from the playwrights before his time, and what was his original creation. In the end, the treatise indicated the gain and lost of Li Yu's pursuit for novelty.
