Chagall's distinct artistic character makes him famous in Modern Western Art history. His works possess spatial and temporal freedom, bold imagery and subjective color; all which illustrate his character. With direct observation of Chagall's visual language, one finds implications of the Far east; especially the creative features of China folk art. From this viewpoint, this essay investigates his Jewish nationality, his belief in Hesodic Judiasm, middle age Byzantine art, Morden western art , and the connections between oriental and occidental visual perspectives: by going one step further, we can make profound discoveries on the Eastern nature of Chagall's character. From an Easterner's perspective, I make a study of Chagall in order to help us understand Chagall and his art. while discussing the connections between Chinese and Western art through the parallels found between the work of Chagall and Chinese Folk art. Thus, we shall find inspiration in the unity of Chinese and Western art.
