China and Japan are friendly neighboring countries. Loanwords in Chinese and Japanese have common characteristics as well as different characteristics. This thesis is a comparative study on Chinese and Japanese loanwords. There are two different points between the two kinds of loanwords. One is that the trend of their borrowing methods are different: Chinese-loanwords tend to come from free translation, but Japanese-loanwords tend to come from transliteration. The other is that the loanwords nativization (i.e. the loanwords' adaptation to Chinese and Japanese) is different; Chapter 3 of this thesis has it in details. There are five parts of this thesis.Chapter 1 is an introduction about this study's purpose, significance and the previous studies.Chapter 2 is about the basic situation of the two kinds of loanwords, including their definitions, histories, borrowing methods and the changes between their source languages and them, especially, the study about borrowing methods and changes which result in the common and different characteristics between the two kinds of loanwords draws the author's more stress.Chapter 3 expounds Chinese - loanwords and Japanese -loanwords' social culture background and national psychology. Chinese-loanwords' characteristics result from the great-China chauvinism, the low popularization rate of loanwords, all kinds of Chinese dialects, the self-nature of Chinese characters and Chinese thinking in terms of images and association, etc. Japanese-loanwords' characteristics result from its national psychology of creating what is new and original and learning advanced culture modestly, the high popularization rate of loanwords and the convenience of katakana, etc.Chapter 4 introduces the current using situation of the two kinds of loanwords and development prospect. The last part is conclusion.
