The thesis focuses on Xieyihua with a clear definition and a background information, the basis of which is the Chinese philosophy( Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism in general). It points out that the of Xieyihua is derived from the free spirits of Chinese philosophy. Moreover, poetry and calligraphy have played an important role in the development of it. Xieyihua had bud in Tang Dynasty, whose free idea could date back to Wei ,Jin ,Southern and Northern Dynasties. The establishment of the aesthetic standard of YiGe given by Huang XiuFu at the beginning of Song Dynasty was the prelude to Xieyihua which came into being with the efforts by Su Shi etc.and flourished from Yuan to the middle of Ming Dynasty. From the end of Ming to that of Qing, it was brought to a conclusion eclipsing. Xieyihua is extremely good at displaying the internal mind with poetry and calligraphy as its support, expressing objective reality without being restricted by external shape and colour. Free spirits permeate the development of Xieyihua and are decided by its philosophical basis. With orientalization of western learning, western philosophy has been propagated into China and has gradually replaced the traditional Chinese philosophy. The basic principle for art is to recognize and represent the artistic object scientifically and the fact that "Sketch has become the foundation of drawing" has great impact on Chinese painting. Therefore, the diversion of cultural atmosphere and philosophical conception leads to the great loss of tradition in Xieyihua and represses its free _expression. Today we should treat traditional philosophy and culture as what Mr. LUXUN did to the quintessence of Chinese culture---absorbing the essence and deserting the dregs. In short, to develop Chinese painting, we should inherit the positive element from traditional philosophy and the traditional culture as well to give a full play of the latitude of Xieyihua.
