Of the 15 states mentioned in the Book of Songs, Chen, Zheng, Wei, Bei, Yong are all in today's Henan province, the onetime royal domain of the Yinshang dynasty. The accumulativeness and adoptiveness in culture itself make it inevitable for the ballads of those states to present some special features of the Yinshang culture. This paper explores the evolvement and adoptiveness of folk customs from a developmental perspective. By analyzing the colliding and fusing process of the Shang and Zhou cultures, the author approaches the vast variety of regional cultures, thus presents a comprehensive perspective on the ballads, or folk songs, of this area. On this basis, the author further pursues the causes and analyses the themes of different ballads, thus makes this study even more worthwhile. Apart from the introduction and conclusion, this paper is laid out in the four sections as follows:I. The origin and features of Yinshang culture. The Shang people were from one of the Dongyi tribes called Xie, so they adopted some cultural factors from the Dongyi culture. This develops into the following characteristics of the Yinshang culture: the emphasis on religious authority, wizardry; the worship of military force, melody and entertainment.II. Religious influence of the Yinshang culture upon ballads' development. In the Book of Songs, the ballads with direct descriptions of dancing are mainly from the above-mentioned states. There's an abundance of folk customs and cultures in the dancing, which is closely related to the ideas of praying for rain, worshiping reproduction and so on in the Yinshang wizardry and religions. The magnificent religious ceremonies such as Zheng, Wei, Bei,Yong's Sanglin, Fuxi Festival, Chen's wizardry dance, became good opportunities for young people to meet and choose their future spouses.
