As a kind of comprehensive artistic form, opera consists of a great deal of artistic elements, of which aria can give prominence to the affections and personality of the characters as well as plays a crucial part in building up the composer's unique style. Therefore, it is of great importance to master the composer's aria style for the success of a singer's play. Because of their conspicuous achievements in the field of opera composition, the aria works of Giuseppe Verdi and Giacomo Puccini have been frequently practiced by many vocal music learners and singers. However, it is neither wise nor beneficial to their development to choose this kind of works when the learners have not gained enough vocal acrobatics and experience. Being a soprano voice part herself, the author has been familiar to the both composer's works of this type. Hereby, by the detailed analysis of some soprano aria in Verdi and Puccini's operas, this thesis intends to compare their artistic style and vocal characteristics in order to help the learners and singers understand these compositions more thoroughly.This thesis consists of five chapters:Chapter one, by giving a short introduction of the present research on the artistic styles and vocal characteristics of the soprano aria in Verdi and Puccini's operas, the emphasis, approaches, as well as the significance of this thesis is revealed.Chapter two is a brief introduction to Verdi and Puccini's individual development and main achievements.Chapter three refers to the composers' difference in social attitudes, aesthetic and composing tendencies, which are caused by their different...
