This paper focuses on oboe reed's types, making and its relationship in actual performing. The theme primarily includes the different types of reed, the description of the reed-making procedure, detailed retrospect of the history of oboe and reed, the relationship and influence between reed and instrument through the elaboration of reed, and in particular their important relationship in actual performing and especially in orchestra performance. As the subject of this discussion is on oboe-reed theory, it is hoped that this paper can serve as a reference for performers of this major in their processes of playing, and has practical significance on the study of reed-making, its related areas of tone and performing practice. The thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter elaborates on the importance of reed. Through some acoustics theories, it makes necessary explanation on the relationship between reed and oboe, and analyzes the relationship between reed and tone. The quality of reed has a very important impact on tone. This chapter will make a deep study on this to clarify the important relationships between oboe and reed, and tone and reed. The second chapter focuses on the retrospect of the history of the instrument and reed. In this chapter, the paper first describes the history of oboe. Oboe is a very ancient instrument. Through evolution over centuries, oboe develops into a family series of instrument that includes a variety of different mode ranging from low to high pitches. Through the description of its history, 1 will further talk about the origin of its related reed. The third chapter introduces different types of reed. There are a variety of reed-makings. Different performers in various places may have a different way of make reed. Each mode of reed produces a different tone with its own characteristics. I will illustrate some representative types of reed-making and the technique standard it adopts through giving examples so as to enable readers to better comprehend reed types and have a further fundamental understanding of reed. I will also analyses our country's reed types and describe the historical causes of its origin and development. The fourth chapter introduces the process of reed-making, which is a skill that has to be mastered by every professional performer. In order to have a reed that they are pleased with, many students need to spend a great amount of time on it. This chapter gives a detailed explanation regarding the process of making reed and makes analysis and study on some specific technical problems. The fifth chapter concerns the discussion on relationship between reed types and performing practice. In this chapter, I will make more analysis regarding the relationships between reed types and solo and orchestra band to clarify the important status of oboe reed in performance as well as respondingmethod used in performing practice. I will make further reflection and plausible research on this subject.
