This paper adopts ancient Chinese official documents among officers of parallel ranks as the research object. A combination of chronological analysis and parallel comparison is made during the research. When analyzing the style change of ancient Chinese official documents among officers of parallel ranks, we mainly take the chronological method. The research starts with the changing process of some main forms of the above mentioned documents, such as Yi (started in Chunqiu Period, first called YiShu, a form of document between officers; then used as queries between different governmental departments in Tang Dynasty; later called Yi in general), Guan (used by governmental departments to question each other since Tang Dynasty; abolished after Qing Dynasty), Ci ( the function is similar to Yi and Guan), Z) (started in Song Dynasty, used between governmental departments of parallel rank but belonging to different systems), JieTie (started in Song Dynasty; became a kind of confidential document in Ming Dynasty; the function changed to transcript for the document to the emperor in Qing Dynasty) and ZhaoHui (stared in Ming Dynasty, used between departments of different governmental systems). In this research, we try to summarize the basic patterns of change for ancient Chinese official documents among officers of parallel ranks, i.e.①Its change follows a process from simple to complicated, then back to simple again. ②Its change takes on a trend of which its style and function gradually specializes from others'.③The social institution and the will of the government always have a significant influence on the general setting and division of its function, which thus influences the change of its style.On this basis, this paper analyzes the features of ancient Chinese official documents among officers of parallel ranks with the three basic elements of an article, i.e. format, diction and style, the research unfolds in the following steps:(1)We analyze those features through the study of ancient pieces.(2)We compare official documents among officers of parallel ranks with other ancient official documents such as the documents decreed by the emperor, documents from higher ranked officials to lower ones and documents from lower ranked officials to higher ones.(3)From the above mentioned comparison and analysis, we draw our conclusions:①Comparing with ordinary documents, the format of ancient official documents among officers of parallel ranks, i.e. the outside form and main structure of the document, is relatively fixed. They have all adopted the format of Kongtai/Pingtai/Chuge (a format used in ancient Chinese letters or documents which, out of respect, requires a blank or a new line after some words related to the royal family, the mausoleum, the body, heaven and earth, etc.)②lts diction, i.e. the manner of writing and wording, with professional phraseology, is more concise, appropriate and accurate.③Comparing with other official documents, its style, i.e. the way of expressing ideas, mainly focuses on statement...
