BaoPuZiNeiPian is an important book about Taoism, written by Ge Hong in Eastjin Dynasty. There are twenty pieces in it. Its content includes "the supernatural being, strange medicine, ghosts and gods, keeping in good health, and keeping off the disadvantages". Because of the special content, its language is also very special. This thesis just focuses on the embryo study of its language with regard to lexical aspect. The first chapter of the thesis introduces the writer GeHong and all his life, BaoPuZiNeiPian' s creating process, the edition and the present situation of researching it. The second chapter illustrates several lexical characteristics: specialty, argot and abundance. We explain many glossaries about Taoism on specialty characteristic. About argot characteristic we discuss some medicines' dormantpartner. Its vocabulary is abundant, which is reflected by all kinds of geminate word, synonym and measure word. In the third chapter we discuss many new words and new meanings, which are judged by HanyuDaCiDian, and trace back to the origin of some words to reveal their value in the history of Chinese. The fourth chapter compares some words' meaning in BaoPuZiNeiPian with in current Chinese. Those meanings which are not changed show that they have appeared in mediaeval times. This can supply references to tracing back to the origin of some words' meaning. To those meanings which are changed, we will find its rules from the comparison. In the end, this thesis advances some complementary opinions in the form of appendix.
