Mental health is to develop a person's mood to the best state withoutconflicting with others in body, intellectual power and emotion. Up tillnow, people have studied a lot about mental health and proposed variousstandards on it. This thesis gives a brief account of some representativetheories such as, Allport's mental health model, Maslow'sself-realization model, Rogers' full exertion of function model,Fromm's beginner's model and the mental health model established byChinese psychologists. Personality is a sort of particular general modelwhich composed a person's thought, emotion and behavior. It includes thestable mental quality which can identify a person. There are so manytheories on it. This thesis merely elaborates some theories of personalitytrait and theories of personality type related to our study to meet theneeds of our study. It has been an important psychological topic to study the mentalhealth of college students. The previous studies about Chinese collegestudents show that 10%-30% of them are perplexed by mental problems, suchas, depression, anxiety, paranoid ideation and interpersonal sensitivityetc. Most of these studies are crosswise in the light of different majors, genders and groups, rather than the lengthwise research on the tendencyof the college students' mental development. And our 8-year study getsthe medical majors as the object, explores the changes of their mentalstate with time's pushing forward. This lengthwise study covers therelationship between the mental health and personality's type andfeature. All these will provide theoretical basis for the psychologicalhealth education of medical students. Our study adopted Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90),Eysenck PersonalityQuestionnaire(EPQ) and Type-A Behavior Pattern and respectively carriedout 4 times' random sampling tests about the medical juniors in the yearof 1996, 1998, 2000 and 2002.Through statistics about the final data ofthe tests, we can draw the conclusions as following:1.The rate of the medical majors who have mental troubles is diversein different ages. But the symptoms are nearly the same.2.The mental state of the type-A medical majors is inferior to thetype-B.3.Among the male medical majors, the gap between the type A and typeB are great but comparatively narrower to the female.4.Medical majors' mental health is closely related to their behavior, for instance "excessive competition and hostility". And differentexists between the male and female.5. The mood-unstable medical majors catch apt to appear depressedsymptom, extroverted medical majors born easy to produce the hostility. With the result of the analysis, four suggestions are give to themedical majors' education in Psychology:1) The educators should take theexperience's influence on the medical majors into consideration.2)Educate the medical majors about Psychology in accordance with both theirdifferent personalities and gender features. 3)Pay more attention tothose who have outstanding trait of " excessive competition andhostility".4) Treat the features of personality, esp. Neuroticism andDepression, as the forecasting norms of mental health.
