In ancient China, among the many types of family, the imperial scholar's family is a research topic of great research value, especially in Tang Dynasty. In the long process of China's feudal society, the Tang Dynasty is a period with highly developed politics, economics, culture, etc. And as one of the most important reasons that count for Tang's prosperity, the implementation and improvement of the imperial examination can't be neglected. While among the many candidates of the imperial examination, the imperial scholar seems to be valued most. So in the social lives of Tang Dynasty, the rising imperial scholar's family absolutely deserves much attention.The first part of this dissertation is a brief introduction to the imperial scholar's family. The author first introduces the development of imperial examination in Tang Dynasty and the social status of the imperial scholar. Secondly, the author states the extensive origins of those imperial scholars and the needed qualifications to be an imperial scholar.In the second part, the author mainly illustrates the matrimonial relationship between different families under the imperial examination system. During the Sui and Tang Dynasty, the emperors changed their official-selecting system and established the imperial examination system to replace the former one. At the same time, scholar's views towards social values changed and their attitudes towards marriage and family also changed accordingly.The third part of this dissertation makes a detailed exploration to the living conditions of the imperial scholar's family in Tang Dynasty. This part also serves as the main body of this dissertation. Material life is one of the most important components that constitute the social lives of the imperial scholar's family. The matrimonial life and spiritual life are all based on it. This dissertation gives a brief description of the imperial scholar's family in Tang Dynasty from the perspective of their daily lives and economic lives. The spiritual life in imperialscholar's family mainly includes three aspects: family education, entertainment and religious belief. So, the author takes this part as the focus when introducing the imperial scholar's family lives.In the fourth part of this dissertation, the author summarizes the main characteristics of the imperial scholar's family through the comparison with the noble family. Though the two types of family are all belong to the scope of scholar's family, the former one is kind of deny and innovation to the latter one. The two types of family are developed and declined in the process of inter-substitution. Of course, coexistence, transformation and changes are inevitable in those inter-substitution processes.The fifth part of the dissertation indicates the historical status of the scholar's family. The last part of this dissertation points out the internal relationships between the imperial scholar's family and the whole society in Tang Dynasty. On one hand, the degree of social development dominants the progress of the imperial scholar's family;on the other hand, the imperial scholar's family also influences the development of the whole society.In a word, to have a detailed study on the rising family—the imperial scholar's family in Tang Dynasty—conforms to the current trends and directions of social history studies. So, researches like these have an important academic value.
