In the contemporary literature, the presence of life and the significance of subsistence always draw the close attention of both domestic and foreign writers, who, through the deference of their writing skills and the unique characteristics of narration, reveal to the readers every aspect of the pictures of the human life. As to China and Japan, geographically adjacent to each other through a narrow strip of water, their cultural backgrounds are nearly from the congenetic origin. Therefore the both nations have strong impacts on each other in their history of literature. Along with the great changes of the present economic mode, the contemporary Chinese writers, with their writing styles of the neo-realism, start to introduce the material crisis and metaphysical bewilderment of the present Chinese society under this special living circumstance. The tragedy of human life and the living circumstance that people encounter are all materialized. This is the philosophical concern of the human being. Similarly, the contemporary Japan is also facing its crises and puzzles, which mainly stand on the metaphysical bewilderment, solitude and perplex while the material substances are of abundance. The thematic subjects of human subsistence raised by the writers of both nations are different due to the difference of life styles, difference of perceptions, the substance of the bewilderment and the timeframes. However, ideaistic emphases of the writers of the both nations are the same and they reach the same goal through different ways of perceptions, especially in the discussion of human substances and human life. This thesis contains three chapters. The first chapter focuses on the arising, development and nature of the neo-realism in contemporary Chinese literature, the development of Japanese literature and the commutative penetration of Chinese literature and Japanese literature. From the study of the actuality and the characteristics of the contemporary Japanese literature, we will find that the human subsistence they concern of is of deference from what Chinese writers do even though there do exist some similarities. In the second chapter, several main writers are mentioned. The writers and their thoughts on the human existence will be unscrambled in this chapter through the analyses of their works and the details will be given to show the description of the human subsistence in the contemporary literary works. The third chapter emphasizes comprehensively on longitudinal and parallel comparisons, indicating that even though the cultural backgrounds and the economic modes are different in the two nations, the literature is identical when interpreting the connotation of human subsistence, especially its international, human and modernistic perspectives. It accords with the regular pattern of literature development to pay more attention to the content of humanity in literature. As long as the literature exists, never shall the probe into the significance of life and the value of human existence be avoided and omitted.
