The symbol is the media for human to know the world as well as the physicalmeans of expressing thoughts and emotions. By the means of symbol the transmissionof knowledge and mutual communication are made, meanwhile the domain of humanconsciousness is precisely a symbol world. A famous American philosopher who calledPeirce did a great job for the symbol theory. He not only induced the characteristics ofsymbol, but he connected the symbol with other things and entitled its definition. Hisestablishing Three Classifications of Symbol is deeply effect. Peirce's importantindicating is to divide symbol into three categories-Icon, Index, and Symbol. Becauseit shows the different way of logical expression and ideology is strict and integrity, hisestablishing symbol theory provides the thinking method and the broad space for theartistic research and particular in the design theory research. It possesses the practicalvalue and the practical significance. The research of meaning in Peirce's symbol theory to Graphic design is theadvanced study based on the approach of semiotics. At present the research is scare.Peirce's theory "from symbol to object and the items of interpretant" formed therelatively integrated thinking process and logical system. However, it is an acceptableprocess, which is continuous, progressive, developing and open rather than closed. Thisarticle tries to elaborate the Peirce's symbol theory. It enumerates the massive vividdetailed illustrations and studies Icon, Index, and Symbol significance of Graphicdesign. Especially the "three classifications of symbol " in Graphic Design fits for therelation between symbol and accepted by the audiences, which prove the design symbolhas social vision effect. This article tries to elaborate Graphic Design theory and presentsituation by Peirce's three classification of symbol. With except to provide a kind oftheories resources and thinking method. The research on Peirce's symbol theory is only limited to the general summary inthe academic circles at present, it is hardly to see that someone can study the symbolsystem which relates to practice effect. This article bases on research the meaning ofPeirce's symbol theory to Graphic design, which propose and discuss the relationshipbetween symbol and its acceptance. Icon, Index, and Symbol in Graphic design practiceis put to carry on understanding. From the view of structure the thesis is divided into three parts. The first is toprobe into Peirce's symbol theory, analyze its philosophic origin and the content of the"three classifications of symbol". The second part discusses Icon, Index, and Symbol ofgraphic design by Peirce's symbol theory. The third part is to elaborate the meaning ofsymbol theory to Chinese Graphic Design. Emphasized to elaborate the methodologysignificance of symbol theory to Chinese Graphic Design and set up the symbol graphicin Chinese Graphic design will produce four good meaning after introduction asmethodology.Peirce's symbol theory has important realistic meaning for Graphic design. In thewhole process of graphic design will relate the application of Peirce's symbol theory .Sothe symbol theory can be the Philosophy methodology research and it also can be thePractical method instruction. This symbol theory will reveal its value and affection.Entering the 21st century, Chinese graphic designs still stay at the problems of how totreat the relationship between traditions and modern, nationality and internationality, creativity and acceptance and so much like these cultural art relations. And also how todevelop Chinese graphic designs is faced with in the contemporary development spaceand so on. Peirce's symbol theory maybe provides some new methods, new way ofthinking and breakthrough point to researcher and creator. It is the original intentionwhy I write this thesis.
