Remembering past times is such a cultural phenomenon of both old and new characteristics: it is old because any kinds of remembering past times last human nature's historic memory and tradition by way of remembering the past; it is also new because the modernity background vests it with new realistic value, causing it possesses new experience category both in the content and the form, which turns it to become a new question and further the considerations toward the questions of modern peoples'social situation, difficult survival position and cultural cast. Under the modernity historical background, the humanity has lost the sense of certainty and safety toward survival and has become the modern people which was swayed by personal gains and losses; Therefore, people are eager to turn to past and the history for seeking the lose of the eternal, and remembering the past times was treated as a shortcut to understand the spiritual home. The emotional trend of remembering past times therefore emerges in a way which is more obvious and strong than any other times.As a kind of cultural phenomenon which has close relationships with social reality and spiritual world, Shanghai's remembering past times mainly results from the"legend"characteristics that imagined and cast on the city of shanghai, and only in movie, a modern artistic form, can people find ways for expressing different self and social reality. This significance of such kind of legend to Shanghai is to some extent similar to Roland Barthes'explanation to the myth. If the myth restricts a nation's spiritual production in source as well as the future development in form, then the legend will narrate the city's history not only in the ideology, but also in imagination aspect. The ideology and imagination constitute the modernity background of Shanghai's remembering past times in this paper, which has concrete manifestation in coexistence of intersecting, severing and continuing between metropolis's materialization culture and spiritual home.This paper follows the train of thought of outlining the reappearance, analyzing, and continuing the rebirth of the spirit of the"legend", by way of comprehending the following three models of remembering past times: returning, reconsidering, approving. Emphasis is paid on the hidden connection between the highly metropolis civilization of 30s and 40s of shanghai and the anticipation for"restoring the prestige of Shanghai"during the process of urbanization, based on investigating how"remembering past times"communicates with the highly metropolis civilization of 30s and 40s of shanghai. And based on the communications of history with present times, commercial consuming and daily estheticism, the veil on remembering past times of shanghai is removed, and meaning and realistic significance are revealed.
