Su Qing was an authoress of Shanghai-School in 1940's who was full of feminine consciousness. She was also a townwoman who lived under her own steam. Su Qing's feminine consciousness stemed from traditional Chinese personality. And it had the same pragmatist and rational values with citizens. In her works, it was marked by secularism and libido. She wrote for earning living, focused on daily life, opposed too new or too old ideas only approved of reformism. She weltered in material affairs, stressed natural gender and asked for females'sexual desire. Secularism helped her to lead an independent life different from traditional female fate. However, libido was made use of by male supremacy. New woman as Su Qing was still"Le deuxième sexe". This thesis consists of three chapters to study Su Qing's feminine consciousness, which is a mixture of old and new, tradition and modernity, what's the cause and how did it present. The first two chapters study the causes in growing order. The third chapter focuses on the content it embodies.Chapter one: under the social background of City Ningbo which is on the process of modernization, Su Qing was born in an open-minded landed gentry family. The birth background provides opportunity of modern education. Meanwhile, it proved the evidence of Su Qing's complicated modernity. The trend of equality between two sexes gave a false impression, and she was lack of experience. As a result, feminine consciousness was born and hidden under highly regarded self-awareness.Chapter two: under the high speed development social background of City Shanghai, Su Qing emigrated to the metropolis Shanghai with husband and established a modern nuclear family. Women liberation brought metropolitan housewives new rights as well as duties. Divorce compelled Su Qing to be a professional woman.
