Functional Grammar Analysis Of The Different Translations Of The "dream Of Red Mansions"

In the 1960s, Halliday proposed functional grammar theory, pointing out that a text has three metafunctions, that is, ideational function, interpersonal function and textual function. The present thesis attempts to make a comparative analysis of the source text and different target texts of "A Dream of Red Mansions" and to offer a new way of translation research.Among the three metafunctions by Halliday, textual function refers to the function that language organizes a text. Thematic progression is an important concept of text analysis and plays a major role in the coherent development of a text. Ellipsis and cohesion are used in the course of translation, from which the cohesion between sentences in a text is achieved by the two means and we can analyze the differences of the two languages in the course of translation. Interpersonal function has great significance for analyzing the transferring course of translation of such a literature masterpiece of distinctive features in aspects of culture, nation and society. When we analyze the source text and target text of "A Dream of Red Mansions", an analysis of the interpersonal function of the source language and target language based on the methodology of critical linguistics can offer us more enlightenment. The methodology of critical linguistics is mainly based on Halliday's functional grammar, which lays emphasis on the observance of the living surrounding and social and historical background of text production, distribution and consumption and focuses its attention on the thoughts and concepts which we are accustomed to and ignore when analyzing texts so that we examine them from new aspects.
