Yan Lianke is a distinguished novelist in the contemporary literary world. In his village novels he constructs a unique village world under the context of village power, where the village protagonists perform vividly their moving and bitter story, which is the unique feature of Yan's village novels and is mainly covered in the introduction of this dissertation.The body of this dissertation comprises four chapters. The first chapter mainly addresses itself to Yan's narration of village power which unveils the veils covering the village power so that its profound historical and realistic background is accessible. In the dissertation the extensive cultural background is analyzed in the following five aspects: the perplexing politics complex, the existing clan power, the inrooted "official standard" and being afraid of officials, the backward economy and the shackles of village habits and customs. The second chapter mainly analyzes the types of Lian' s village power, which can be classified into four types: political power, clan power, cultural power and "revolutionary" power. The third chapter mainly discusses the characters depicted in Yan' s village power. The characters appeared in Yan' s novels can be classified into the following three types: the first type is people with power, among them the representatives are the secretary of village party branch in Emotional Hell, Si Malan in Village Years and Mao Zhipo in Suffering Living. The second type is the persons in the margin of power, among which third Uncle, the headman of the village production team is well depicted. The third type is the powerless people, who are symbolized in Yan' s village novels and about whom Yan is most concerned. Lu Liuming in Picture of Heaven is the representative of the powerless. The fourth chapter carries out a study of the evolution of Yan' s narration style, which is mainly attributed to the conversion of narration techniques, the change of writing notion and expansion of works' range.Depicting the village power under a profound cultural background, Yan not only describes the three types of power existing in the village, but also different people in the village who center around the village power.
