Bai Xianyong, one of the most famous Chinese writers, plays an active part in the history of literary in the 20th century.Through the detailed analyze of writer's life, thoughts and works, the paper discusses how Bai Xianyong goes through the western and eastern literature successfully on the basis of his well-known knowledge and how he compare, assimilate and combine the two different literatures in order to form his special understanding of literature itself; and how he digest this art characteristics into his own novel world. Then the thesis explains how he creates his own writing style with the features'integrate tradition into modern and examine tradition with modern'.Chapter 1 inquires into his literary ideas and grotesque style. And make a brief report of Bai xianyong s study in critical world. Therefore put forward the viewpoint of this paper.Chapter 2 talks about the relationship between Bai Xianyong and Chinese traditional culture. How he absorbs traditional Chinese culture in his works, thus creates his own'poetic novel'. And the paper does a case study in'A Dream of Visiting the Garden'.Chapter 3 studies the relationship between Bai Xianyong and the western culture. How he absorbed the creative thoughts and theoretical techniques of western modernism, and then made his own recreation. And the paper does a case study in'The Death of Chicago'.Chapter 4 is the research in Bai's sole novel'An Illegitimated Child'. It analyzes the special qualities of Bai's work.Chapter 5 is the conclusion and extension of the paper. It summarizes the change of his attitudes towards western and traditional Chinese cultures, and its meaning for creating a new situation for the study of the relationship of Chinese and foreign literature.
