This thesis firstly defines two concepts: Du Fu's poems written in Chang'an during the period when Chang'an was occupied by the rebel forces, and his underground patriotic poems, composed in occupied Chang'an, which taking the methods of metaphor to express his patriotic feelings and record underground patriotic activities in a concealed way. Du Fu's underground patriotic poems are different from those political poems composed when government's behaviour needs to be criticized in a euphemistic way, and are not the same with common patriotic poems composed when the nation is occupied by enemies but without any real underground patriotic activities involved. Du Fu's underground patriotic poems create a special new category of Chinese patriotic poems. This thesis aims to give a thorough study about this special category of poems and to find out Du's creation. There are four chapters in this thesis. Chapter one gives roughly a historical background and expressive patterns of Du's poems in the occupied Chang'an, and introduces a panorama when these poems were conducted. The second chapter attempts to survey on Du's achievement of these underground patriotic poems, and to find out the artistic attainments and strong patriotism from his specific works. Chapter three discusses breakthroughs in terms of themes and artistic skills in Du's underground poems, by comparing with predecessors'political poems expressed in metaphorical patterns. Chapter four explains by several examples the far-reaching effects of those patriotic poems wrote by Du during the time when the capital was occupied.
