Cultural Default Response, And The Translator

In this thesis, the author chooses the issue of cultural default from the collection of cultural issues in translation, trying to analyze its formation as well as the translator's strategies in dealing with it. In the fourth part focusing on the translation strategies, the issue is analyzed in two separated but inherently relatedphases----understanding and rendering. In the phase of understanding as thepreparation for rendering, the author suggests carrying out information enrichment to the cultural defaults first to realize the same or near storage of cultural information in the mind of the translator as in the brain of the original-culture readers expected by the original writer before he / she commences the second phase of rendering. In the second phase, the question of applying foreignization or domestication gets involved in the translator's dealing with the cultural information he / she draws out during the first phase. By analyzing the factors having influence over the decision of translation strategy application and the current condition, the author generates the conclusion that foreignization would take the dominance in the aspect of cultural translation while domestication would be used in majority in the aspect of language since the responsibility of foreignization in language has been basically and successfully completed from its commencement in the 30s of the last century.
