Yuan Jie, living in the Early and Golden periods of the Tang Dynasty poetry, witnessed the flourishing and recession of the dynasty, and experienced the unstability of the society at that time, which formed his distinctive world outlook, and additionally formed his views of life and thoughts of literature. Notwithstanding his life as a hermit in moutains or beside rivers, he concernded about the government. As an officer, he worked hard and successfully. His poems, trying best to restore antient ways, waged the battle against the popular views. His comment on works advocated urbane literature and laid stress on practice. Compared with Yuan Jie's works, his literal thoughts was more outstanding and more important in then circle of writing. Based on Yuan Jie's literal thoughts, the dissertation endeavours to restores them to the original state, probes into Yuan's system of literal creation, and analyses the deep reason of his thoughts.The dissertation can be divided into three parts:I. The probe into the origin of Yuan Jie's literal thoughts. The reason why Yuan Jie held distinctive literal thoughts is intimately related to the developing tide of the whole history of Chinese literal thoghts. Besides, Yuan Jie's experience of early life, family environment, by which his characteristics were formed, had important influences on the formation of his thoughts as well.II. Yuan Jie's literal thoughts. By means of interpreting Yuan Jie's works, we conclude into three aspects: first, the practical literal outlook of advice to the higher authority; second, the advocation of urbane works against set rules of poems which restored to the antient ways; third, the liberate indepent literal outlook that asked for independent thinking. The three aspects above interconnected with each other and composed together as a whole. It cannot express Yuan Jie's literal thoughts completely that each of these three aspects was omited.III. The relation between Yuan Jie's literal thoughts and Qiezhong Collection of Works. The book by Yuan Jie abundantly reflected the compiler's thoughts. Opinions and aesthetics were the two standard Yuan Jie selected works into the book. It reveals not only Yuan Jie's literal thoughts, but his aesthetical views of poems as well. As a result, we can get more complete knowledge of his literal thoughts.
