| As an outstanding writer in China's literary world, Zhang Jie has received successive awards and in the meantime aroused various controversies. This is an attractive and thought-provoking phenomenon which is greatly related to her unique individuality of writing. The previous researches either commend her pursuit and quest for the full development of the spirit of humanity from the angle of humanitarianism, or affirm to her status as the founder of feminist literature in the new age from the viewpoint of feminist literature. But these researches are largely restricted to a superficial depth wanting a deeper exploration and a wider horizon. In a broader field of vision, this thesis combines the research of Zhang Jie and that of the contemporary history of literature, aiming at seeing about her special status and value through the teasing of the process of change in her themes of creation, comparing her relative works, delving into her individuality of writing as well as her female consciousness, especially the process from the germination, the development to the deepening of her consciousness of being individual once neglected and misunderstood by the mainstream discourse.According to the development of Zhang Jie's theme of creation from"human beings—female beings—individual beings", the body of this thesis is divided into three chapters. In Chapter One the author looks back on the situation of creation in the literary field dominated by the insurgent humanitarian thought, analyzes the focus of her concern of literary creation along with the characteristics among the common features of her works and reviews the germination of her female consciousness as well as the flashes of her consciousness of individuality during the period from the end of the 1970s to the beginning of the 1980s (before 1981 or so). In Chapter Two the author explores her creation during the beginning of the 1980s to that of the 1990s (about from 1981 to 1993), with references to the thought of feminist literature in that period, narrates the change of her theme of creation to the seeking to the fate of females, discusses her gradually spouted individuality of creation as well as the acceptance of destiny of her works, and analyzes her twisted evolution of her consciousness of being female and individual.
