From Western Calendar Making-friends East Division Of Literati Mentality Research

The FenSi system of East Capital is a set of official ranks established by Tang Dynasty in Luoyang. During the years of Baoli to Huichang (from the first month, AD 825 to the last month, AD846), a number of important literati including LiuYuxi, BaiJuyi, LingHuchu, LiDeyu, NiuSengru, LiShen etc, have congested in the position of FenSi system. By analyzing the official situation and living conditions of these literati combined with their literary activities, the mentality of literati in this period can be divided into three typical kinds:Liang Yuan mentality; SiHao complex; HuTian realm. LiangYuan mentality stands for an ideal lifestyle of the literati, including political and cultural life. SiHao complex is more like the hermitage, which represents a kind of pure quality of integrity and nobility that Confucians should possess. SiHao complex is a kind of hermitage full of expectations which aims at maintaining dignity and chastity of Confucians. HuTian realm is a free mental state which ranges from extreme leisure to ecstasy and then to casual life. Through these approaches, Confucians finally forget their identity, responsibility and mission which means self-cultivation, family-management, nation-governing and world- pacifying. In this way, they step into the HuTian realm by forgetting the true Confucian state.By examining the FenSi system of Eastern Capital and the literati’s choice of whereabouts, we have made a description about psychological state of literati in the transformation time of Tang dynasty. Therefore, the inner struggle in literati’s minds before the prosperity of Tang dynasty disappeared can be easily understood.
