Since the 1980's, Tan dun has been considered as one of the most important avant-garde composers in China. Through his adventurous and uncontrolled thinking, innovative spirit, the awareness of Chinese traditional culture and international horizons, and more importantly, through his spirit of breaking the hedge between tradition and modern, art music and popular music, east and west, as well as his conception of syncretizing different cultures, he has developed a school of his own.The dissertation can be divided into two parts. The objective of the first chapter is aimed essentially at the compositional techniques. A comprehensive and thorough analysis is proceeded with nine works in his three different period with summing up of his special technique of music idiom and style. In the second chapter; it discusses the development of the conception of Tan dun's thinking. The dissertation will be divided into two parts, Tan dun's archaic thinking and the influence of the avant-garde consciousness at the late of 20th century. The final conclusion is a summary,which explains his unique Deconstruction and Reconstruction.
