This paper focuses on the syntactic structure of NP1+Vi+NP2. Based on valence theory and three-dimension(semantics, syntax, and pragmatics) theory, the author attempts to investigate the generating mechanism of NP1+Vi+NP2 by analyzing the generation, adjustment and projection of the valence structure of intransitive verb(Vi) with cognitive and pragmatic principles. This paper mainly consists of four chapters. In the first chapter, the author reviews the relevant studies and puts forward the point of view of this research on the basis of them. In the second chapter, the author analyzes the generation and adjustment of the valence stucture on the semantic level. Firstly, the basic and expanding valence structures of Vi are analyzed with the case system. Secondly, the generation of the valence structures is analyzed with case theory and cognitive frame theory. Finally, the pragmatic adjustment of the expanding valence structure is discussed. The third chapter mainly deals with the projection of the expanding valence structure on the syntactic level which results in the structure of NP1+Vi+NP2. Firstly, the author points out that subject-verb-object(SVO) structure will be selected according to economic principle and iconicity principles. Secondly, the selection of syntactic positions during the projection is discussed with figure-ground theory, prototype theory, and markedness theory. Finally, the author introduces three fundamental principles which have influence on the projection. In the last chapter, examples are collected, classified and analyzed according to the theoretical analysis in the former two chapters.
