Wu Cheng "and Zhu And Lu" Thinking

Under the background of difference between Chu His's Li theory and Lsiang-shan's Xing theory on universe principle and self-cultivation , this thesis studies the main characteristic ofWu Cheng's thoughts .1 think the central characteristic of Wu Cheng's is "blending of Chu with Lu" . On ontological theory, Chu His think all Li are present even before the formation of the physical universe, Lu Chiu-yuan think the universe is the mind, the mind is the universe, Lu don't admit anything out of the Mind. These are the ontological difference of Chu and Lu. On the moral theory and learning method, Chu His's opinion is following the path of study and inquiry to investigate the universal Li ; Lu chi- yuan's opinion is honoring the inherent morality of every mind. Chu His urged people to "broaden their mind after reading extensively", to investigate the principle through following the path of study and inquiry, and to seek the morality of sage by pursuing the principle; but Lu Chi-Yuan maintained that "people should enlighten their mind before reading widely", and learners should "establish the morality of mind", and "enlighten the mind", that is "to honor the moral nature", to achieve the sage-hood. On ontological view, Wu Cheng think that Principle(Li)and Material (Qi) can't separate, Mind and Material can't separate. This is Wu Cheng's blending Zhu with Lu in ontological view. On the method of self-cultivation, Wu Cheng bring forward that expressing and cultivating the inner moral nature through experience is essential and investigating for Li is supplementary . This is Wu Cheng's blending Zhu with Lu in methodological view on moral cultivation . Combined Zhu and Lu's opinion, Wu Cheng presented his ontological views that "Principle (li) and Material force (Qi) won't leave forever". So "Principle and Material" won't leave, and also "Mind and Material won't leave". By this method Wu Cheng united Zhu's principle-ontology with Lu's xing -ontology. And on the method culture of morality and enlightenment, Wu Cheng brought forward that honoring the moral nature is ultimate and following the path of study and inquiry is function. It opposed not only the thought that investigates things outside the mind, but also the thought rectifying the mind merely. From that Wu Cheng reconciled Zhu's thinking of following the path of study and inquiry with Lu's thought of honoring the moral nature. Therefore, we can apprehend the development and change of Principle School in Sung and Yuan dynasty.Meanwhile, by probing into the characteristic of Wu Cheng's thoughts-blending Zhuwith Lu , we can apprehend the route and method of the Yuan dynasty 's Confucians whosemain representative is Wu Cheng. He unite the Sung Confucians' thought to established a new path adapting to the needs of their days deeply and thoroughly, This is the basis for us to understand Sung and Ming Li Theory , understand its development route, its internal tension and its historical change.
