Nietzsche is a world-wide acknowledged philosopher; however, it is quite difficult to comment on him. It is said that he is a great thinker because previous traditions of rationalism in philosophy criticized and destroyed by him and major philosophy schools thereafter are directly or indirectly related to him. History of philosophy in the 20th century has been marked by his thoughts, and it is him who has made great influence on the history of philosophy in the 20* century. Nietzsche is a retroactive German mentalist philosopher, who defends the bourgeois and their invasive behaviors. Therefore, to have a better understanding of modern western philosophy and modern western culture, it is necessary to understand Nietzsche's philosophical thoughts first. This thesis tries to explore Nietzsche's philosophical ideas through a study of his works. After dividing his works into earlier ones and later ones, the author discusses the main points of view respectively, and presents the pros and cons of his ideas to draw inspirations for improving the mental conditions of the modern society in China. It can be concluded: Nietzsche's philosophy is all about human beings, or to make it more specific, human individuals; he describes and expresses life from aesthetic perspective; he is not satisfied about explaining everything with rationalism, instead, he believes life will can explain rationalism; he has changed traditional morals, and assessed goods and evils according to the outstanding personalities; he can not tolerate a philistine, fake and useless life, instead, he admires an active, optimistic and creative personality. Nietzsche's philosophy concerns about skepticism and nihilism, and he dares to bring God to court to reveal the falseness of traditional beliefs and morals; Nietzsche 's philosophy concerns about man's will and individualism, and he is not satisfied about explaining everything with rationalism like modern philosophers, instead, he describes a man-centered world for people; Nietzsche's philosophy concerns about liberalism and individualism, and he speaks highly of freedom, hoping to awaken this free and outstanding personality; Nietzsche 's philosophy concerns about optimism and active spirit, while he does not deny that life is lonely, difficult and suffering, he also holds that human should be feel the joy of being part of the history, thus, a vigorous, active and creative life is recommended; Nietzsche's philosophy concerns about social Darwinism, and he believes superiority of the strong over the weak owning to competition and comparison is quite reasonable, and encourages people to have the guts to fight and surpass to be the strong ones. It is inevitable that many flaws exist in Nietzsche's philosophy, however, it should also admit that Nietzsche is a extraordinary and important figure in modern philosophy history of western countries.
