Taking Shanghai society in the Late-Qing dynasty as the background, this thesis focuses on the development of foreign language classes, and tries to demonstrate the interaction relationship between these foreign language classes and the Shanghai society in the Late-Qing dynasty.The whole article is divided as the following three parts: the introduction, the body and the conclusion.The introduction shows the background and the present situation of the research, defines the subject and points out the purpose and the significance of this topic.There are three chapters in the body.Chapter I analyzes the background of foreign languages lasses of Shanghai in the late Qing Dynasty. Four factors gave birth to foreign languages classes: the rise of modern commercial society, the formation of mixed living of Chinese and foreign people, the change of the citizens'mind and the translation obstacles during the delivery of Western learning.Chapter II describes a complete picture of the foreign languages classes of Shanghai in the late Qing Dynasty,in which administration of classes, teaching staff and textbooks at that time are depicted.Chapter III takes Anglo Chinese School and Shanghai Tung Wen College as two objects of study to explore some successful cases of the foreign language classes.At last, the thesis has a conclusion,reveals the influence that foreign language classes had on the society. This chapter tries to give a relatively objective evaluation of foreign languages classes through the comparisons with other foreign languages education organizations.
