The development of ancient Chinese novel has experienced a long time. It is quite difficult for Chinese ancient novels to grow up from a little bud to a big tree. Because there is no dividing line of literature, history and philosophy then, we are puzzled when we try to search for the headwaters of ancient novel. However, the literati has made an agreement that the mythology, history books, and essay books are the mothers of Chinese ancient novels. They have an important influence on the production and development of ancient novel, and they also leave a deep impression on ancient novels, which can be seen from the three books of Liuxiang, a poet in west Han dynasty, Xinxu, Shuoyuan and Lienv legend.Through the analysis of Liuxiang and his background, combining with the research results of modern scholars, the thesis tries to mark the three books as the transition period of ancient novel. Then, the author discusses the novel features of the three books, and points out the disadvantages of the three books as a novel. In the end, the thesis analyzes relationship of the three books and history books and essays before, and it observes that Liuxiang inherited the writing methods of history books before. At the same time, this writing method has an illumination on later literature. As a whole, this thesis manages to explore the relationship of Liuxiang's three books and novels from the view of ancient Chinese novels' development.
