Ballet is a comprehensive art combining music, pantomime, fine arts of the stage and literature. During the development of more than 300 years, with the development of different cultures, the spiritual intension and form of the ballet were changing. An outstanding phenomenon among them was that the function of the music was more and more important. Music was no longer only the simple stereo offering the rhythm and atmosphere for dance, but turned into a source of the whole spirit of a ballet. No matter in the plot pushing, the playing up of dramatic scene and lyrical behavior of the plot, the respect of moulding of arranging for no matter in the structure of the paragraph and personage's image, all played an essential role. " Music is the soul of ballet" is proved truly.How did this change take shape? What kind of relations are between the dance cultural spirit, having with the noumenon development of dance art of music of each eras? What kind of deep reason has it reflected? How did the music command the dance in the ballet? I try to carry on these questions. In order to represent the relation of the music and dance in ballet clearly, history of the ballet is brief reviewed at first, later I focus on the ballet masterpiece in middle period of the 20th century, Spartacus by Russian composer Kazakhstan, so that to prove what kind of meaning and characteristic music (" soul of the ballet") is.The first part of this the thesis is the brief review of the development history of ballet, from the 17th century to middle period of the 20th century, it observed development that focal point was music position and meaning in the ballet. The second part is the analysis to ballet masterpiece Spartacus of the middle period of the 20th century, and compare with La Fille Mal Gardee of the 18th century, Giselle of the 19thcentury. The third part is the conclusion.
