Aram Ilyich Khachaturian was born in1903, Armenia, and died in1978, Moscow. He is a famous Sovietcomposer. conductor, music educator and social activist. Untill now many of his works are still played on the world stage. If we say that composers of twentieth-century put more emphasis on "personalized"innovative technique on the basis of "common" writing, then Khachaturian think that the creation based on folk music resources is an important source of innovation in modern musical and "personalized" technique. In many of his works, composers often "quote" folk music’s melody, rhythm and other musical elements, and use creative techniques of the twentieth century to processe music to make their melody permeated with extremely strong ethnic characteristics and vivid personalization features. Therefore, the skills of combining folk music resources in Armenia and Caucasus with twentieth-century’s techniques in Khachaturian’s work is worth our attention and study. As one of the most representative Armenian composer of Soviet times, though Khachaturian enjoyed a high reputation in the world, he did not cause enough attention in China, especially the ballet music. He created three ballets in his lifetime--"Happiness","Gayane" and "Spartacus", of which "Spartacus" marked that the Russian ballet music reached a new stage, it is also one of the most representative works which are full with ideological and historic content(especially in the1960ballet suite "Spartacus" published by Moscow Music Publish was awarded the Soviet Lenin’s Literary Prize). The song of "Spartacus" has three suites, the first suite is the epitome of the others in music content and writing techniques. Therefore, I chose the the first suite of "Spartacus" as my research object, and studied melodic structure and harmonic language respectively to explore Khachaturian’s rules and guidelines of combining ethnic elements with twentieth-century’s techniques.
