I Dianshizhai Illustrated

The Dianshizhai Pictorial was published by Dianshizhai Press, a subsidiary of ShenBao. It used the technology of Lithography and was printed on Lianshizhi, a high quality Chinese rice paper. The pictorial started publication in April, 1884 (10th Guangxu Year of the Qing Dynasty ) and stopped in the August of 1898, during which time 528 issues were published, providing a record of the new urban popular social and cultural information in those 15 years with more than 4,000 pictures and articles.I want to study Dianshizhai by Visual Culture.Dianshizhai maintained the Chinese traditional painting style, therefore it has the characters of precise and delicate composition, vivid and lifelike copy, etc. At the same time, the western painting style——Perspective had its influence on the pictorial as well. Dianshizhai simply copied and went into thousands of families. This great influence to people's life brought by the mechanical reproduction lets us know the relationship between the authors and the readers, its special value in the market, and also makes me think over some issues about the visual culture of today: Does the national art works like Dianshizhai attract people's eyes in today's plentiful visual society? Not only children but also adults enjoyed Dianshizhai in those years, how about cartoon today?...
