Sino-Japanese relation during the Cold War is not a simple bilateral relation by all means, in this time no matter Sino-Japanese relation was friendly or not, which was closely relating to the overall international environment of East-West confrontation as well as Japan's orientation of taking the Japanese-American relation as the foundation of its diplomacy. The Sino-Japanese relation during 1949-1972 directly reflected Japanese-American Alliance's containment against China; the bilateral relation during 1972-1989 was spurred China, Japan and United states' common need to control the Soviet Union and saw a rapid development. The core of Japan's postwar diplomacy is to maximize its independence in the Japanese-American Alliance framework so as to profit from the Cold War rather than pursue the independence in real terms. Therefore, it would see a frustration or setback whenever the Sino-American relation deteriorated or these two countries conducted confrontation and the corresponding development whenever the Sino-American relation had reconciliation break through during the Cold War.This paper, by referring to some relevant research fruits, strives to offer a preliminary search and analyzes upon the role which United States played in the Sino-Japanese relation during the Cold War.The episode of Non-governmental Sino-Japanese relation mainly elaborates on the historic process of the non-governmental links between China and Japan in 13 years from the day of PR. This episode also delivers a further elaboration upon Sato cabinet's various actions of deteriorating Sino-Japanese links and discloses Sato's essence of anti-China mentality and simultaneously presents China's various effort for easing Sato cabinet's sabotage over the Sino-Japanese relation. The episode of bilateral links following the reestablishment of diplomatic links is mainly about the Sino-Japanese relation during the period from the reestablishment of diplomatic links to the conclusion of the Cold War. The episode firstly elaborates on the historical opportunity for the reestablishment of Sino-Japanese diplomatic links bestowed by the Sino-American reconciliation and the general historic process of the reestablishment and analyses the great role which Americans played in the reestablishment of Sino-Japanese diplomatic links and the conclusion of Sino-Japanese Peace and Friendship Treaty, then gives a retrospective picture on the sound development of Sino-Japanese links following the reestablishment of Sino-Japanese diplomatic links, and finally, describes American factors' affects to the Sino-Japanese relation during the fluctuation involving the Sino-American relation in late 1980s and early 1990s.At the last episode, the paper briefly concludes the role which American factors play in Sino-Japanese relation and the their ways to affect the Sino-Japanese relation and delivers prospect to the American factors and the Sino-Japanese links. To sum it up, as the most crucial and the most active external factors, the American factors have been playing an important role in the postwar Sino-Japanese relation, they are also going to do so in the future.
